Going to the Sun

An Engineering Marvel

Construction started on the road in 1924 and was completed in 1933. When you are on this road, just imagine the work it took to create it! Steep cliffs and short guardrails allow for spectacular views of the McDonald and St. Mary valleys while raising your heart rate a bit...

Due to the elevation, the road is generally covered in snow and doesn't open to Logan's Pass until late June / early July however read below on biking/hiking access.

Our favorite time to go is about 2.5-3 hours before sunset. By the time you get to Logan’s Pass, the sun will be starting to set, and it will be incredible. Head up to Hidden Lake Overlook (it is about a 1.5 mile hike up to the overlook and gains a bit of elevation, but you do not have to go the entire trail to get amazing views). You are almost guaranteed to see a Mountain Goat. You can also head down the Highline Trail for about 15 minutes to get glorious views of the valley below and turn around whenever it starts to get dark.

Spring/Fall Glacier Biking

Before Going to the Sun opens and after the snow is plowed (Most of May and June), the road is only open to hikers and bikers. This is an unreal experience. Although it is physically exhausting and mostly an uphill ride, it is worth every breath.

This is also an opportunity after the road closes in fall. You can also bike on the roads to Many Glacier and Two Medicine.

Glacier Landmarks / Non-Hiking Destinations

Lake McDonald / Apgar Village

An iconic view of Glacier and super accessible. You can rent kayaks and motor boats as well as walk around the village and enjoy the shops and food. Don't forget to get ice creak at Eddie's!

Sacred Dancing Cascade

A pullout along Going to the Sun Road a mile past the Lake McDonald Lodge.

Two Medicine Lake

On the East Side of the park, about 45 minutes from the Glacier Park lodge.

Many Glacier Hotel

One of the most scenic areas of the park, this area is pretty crowded but well worth it. The hotel is a destination in itself. Built in 1914 by the Great Northern Railroad, it is a National Historic Landmark.

Lake McDonald Lodge

Another National Historic Landmark, this hotel was built in 1913. Guests use to arrive by boat until road access arrived in 1921.

Waterton Lakes

The Canadian portion of Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park. The Prince of Wales hotel is yet another historic landmark built by the railroad as a way to attract guests despite prohibition if you know what I mean. It is only about an hour from Many Glacier so make it a day trip.

Logan Pass

The highest point along Going to the Sun Road. There is a visitor center with a wildflower exhibit (my personal favorite). You can also walk up the boardwalk just a bit to get expansive views.

Bowman Lake

Head to Polebridge for a famous huckleberry bearclaw and continue on to Bowman Lake. This is our favorite lake to kayak as it is a less crowded area.
